Hello everyone. I am so excited that everyone is thinking outside of the box creating plans they can implement in their life in 2007. First I want to thank all of you for your support and commitment to sharing this site with your family and friends. Because of you, www.blackmoneymatters.com recently won a Black Web Award for 2007. The success of this site is consistent with what we have been discussing for the last few weeks. Identifying your ability and creating a business that is both personally fulfilling and a satisfactory financial vehicle as well. Mr. Gil Michel identified his talent, wrote a vision and made it plain. Then he shared his vision with others. This is what I want to discuss today. You’ve determined your true calling, you’ve envisioned yourself walking into your destiny and now how do you make that happen? Sharing your vision based on your talent with others will allow those individuals to assist you creatively with options of how to get started. After all, that is what deters people most often. They don’t know where to begin. Several weeks ago, I shared with you that I am in the process of revising my book Planning For A Reason, A Season, and a Lifetime.... |

The Gospel of Money |

For months, I have been plagued with the idea of writing a piece that focuses on why so many religious leaders are promoting the concept of prosperity in the form of materialism. You know what I referencing, we have all seen them on tv, heard them on the radio; we have even received their emails.
These religious leaders make promises on behalf of God, stating that if you do this (which usually involves giving them money or sowing seeds into their ministry), God will bless you. These same religious leaders also promote the idea that if one does not possess a great deal of worldly possessions, then they are truly not being blessed by God. Evidently, they must have skipped right past the first five books of the New Testament, which documents example after example of individuals leaving their worldly possessions and following Christ. For them, the blessing was in having the privilege to give up everything to follow Christ. |

For The Love Of Money |

One lazy Saturday morning as I was in bed surfing the net, sipping cappuccino, and listening to the radio, I heard an "oldie," but goodie by The O’Jays called "For The Love of Money." We all know that song! Like many of us, I have heard the song hundreds of times. This particular morning I was listening with an analytical ear as opposed to a "sista’ that loves the O’Jays" ear. The lyrics really began to speak to my goal of having the proper perspective of money within my life for my family, especially with my daughter. Phrases within the song such as, "…don’t let money rule you…" "…don’t let money fool you…" and "don’t let money change you…" are words that speak volumes as to how we should view money within our mind and spirits. Money is a just a tool. It is not a god.
When the lyrics begin to list the horrible acts that people will commit "for the love of money," I realized that the love of money promotes an extremely unhealthy and unbalanced mindset, which can lead to self-destructive and selfish behaviors. In fact, I read in the Bible that "the love of money is the root of all evil". The O'Jays must have had this in mind when singing this song. |

3 Financial Lessons We Can Learn From the Jena Six |

I have been watching with great interest, the case of the Jena Six. For those of you who may not be aware of this high-profile case, it involves six young Black men in a central Louisiana town called, Jena. This town of 4,000 residents has been the hotbed of controversy, demonstrations, and media from all over the world. The issues began when a young Black man decided to sit under a tree on the school property, a privilege that up until that time, had been only reserved for white students. Soon after he did this ‘unthinkable’ act, a group of white students did an unthinkable act of their own, and hung a noose from the tree to send a message to the black students of Jena, “You don’t belong here. Remember you place”. This culminated in a fight where the 6 young black men are being charged with attempted murder and other charges in the beating of a white student and supposedly giving him a concussion (he later attended a party that evening). There have not only been inflammatory statements by other white students but by the District Attorney in that area. He was quoted telling a group of protesting Black students, “I could end your life with the stroke of a pen.” Since then fights have broken out and tensions have flared bringing this small town into the spotlight for many weeks.

Did you have a moment to identify the gift that keeps on giving in your life? Is that talent and/or ability something you would love to do every day all day? Let us begin to explore entrepreneurial opportunities that you can consider taking a risk on. I want to reiterate that this series of articles are designed for ordinary people like myself with a desire to accomplish extraordinary miracles and success in their lifetime. I want you to consider things beyond the scope of sports skills, musical skills, and artistic abilities. For some reason, we are conditioned to believe that traveling down that career path is our greatest opportunity to obtain wealth. I agree that it is very compelling but I know too many entertainers with national acclaim and no money. I have relationships with athletes that have problems money cannot solve. I know creative geniuses without focus and direction in their life. I believe our objective needs to maintain a balance between ability to receive a steady income stream and the opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives.
