An African-American Woman Charter A Bank?  E-mail

The first woman to charter a bank in the United States was an African-American woman!

An African-American woman whose mother was a former slave and whose father is said to have been an Irish immigrant.

Maggie Lena Walker, who began working as a child, helping her mother wash clothes in an alleyway in Richmond, Virginia; was the first woman, black or white, to launch a financial institution for African-Americans.  She overcame not only the oppression of the racist Jim Crow Era, but even defeated the prevalent sexism of the day that purposefully excluded women as viable economic forces.

This African-American visionary was often quoted as saying, , "Let us put our money together; let us use our money; Let us put our money out at usury among ourselves, and reap the benefit ourselves."

She practiced what she preached by only employing African-Americans within a variety of roles from butler to architect throughout her life.  Walker note only owned a bank, but she established a newspaper, The St. Luke Herald, in 1902, and served as one of the national leaders for the St. Luke’s fraternal burial society, which supported the sick and elderly within the African-American community before social security or welfare programs were established.

Is College Worth The Cost  E-mail

Joomla Popin Window by DART CreationsMy younger brother let me listen a few tracks of an album by popular hip-hop artist, Kanye West one day when I was in his car. On the few tracks I listened to, Kanye was basically poking fun of the fact that a growing number of college graduates emerge with nothing more than a retail job at the mall and have not become more marketable. But they could still be proud because, after all, they still have their degree.

Does West have a point? Is it really worth the effort of going through four years of college? Will college graduates be able to reasonably justify the costs of higher education, and if so when? And if it isn’t worth it, at what point in tuition level does it become worth it? Statistics show that tuition rates have risen by 439% since 1982, far surpassing the inflation rate. Even with all the recent uproar about fuel prices, it still is not even half of the increase in tuition. In addition to this, federal grants have consistently been decreasing while students and parents of students continue to take on huge amounts of debt to either land that raise or higher-paying job.

BlackMoneyMaters.com wishes to extend its best wishes to President-Elect Barack Obama.  Many of us watched this hard-fought campaign with great interest (has it really been almost two years!?)  We watched a somewhat obscure, young senator come through the ranks as a person who refused to sink to low levels in name calling, and mud slinging.  We watched as he navigated through false accusations of being a friend to terrorists. We watched as the media played the loops of his former pastor over and over again.

We watched as he was criticized for not being patriotic because he was not wearing a flag pin, or because his wife claimed that she was "now really proud to be American".  But we also watched his class, composure and resolve to sustain the atacks, accusations, and death threats.  And on November 4th, we all watched as the final delegates were counted and Barack Obama was named the next president of the United States of America.

Dear Gil,

Hello.  Well,...I am a rising senior in college.  I was sitting at home tonight, reading an article online about a guy who started his own successful company at the age of 16.  Now, I am thinking to myself, "...ok, this guy has  seemingly financially secure future...so what's your plan!!!???"

The first thought that came to mind was stocks.  But, I know absolutely nothing about them.  I would like to know, where would I begin?  What should I do first?  Do you have any advice for me?

Signed,

Ms. B

Dear Ms. B.,

As cheesy as this may sound, the words of my father-in-law ring true, "Those who fail to plan, plan to fail".  And while life is not completely summed up in those words, it does carry a lot of weight, especially in financial matters.

?Tithing.

There!  I said it!  So many ideas, fears, thoughts, etc. go through one’s mind when this word is said.  It can be said by a preacher in a pulpit or a televangelist on tv…the well of emotions is same.  Give ten percent of your income….remember, gross, NOT net.

I was raised as a “tither.”  My mother, who is an ordained minister, always made sure that we gave a tenth of our allowance every week during Sunday school.  As I grew and became more independent, I continued this practice.

For over twenty years, I cheerfully gave my tithe and much more to every church that I attended.  Prior to arriving to service each week, I would neatly and thankfully complete my tithing envelope, making sure that my handwriting was neat and the flap was tightly sealed.  I would then place the envelop in my bible under my favorite scripture for that week.

When Sunday arrived, I could not wait to get to church for Sunday school and morning service.  The choir would sing, the mother of the church would testify, a deacon would pray, and then……it was time to pass the plate!  I could finally give my tithe.

Approximately ten years ago, I joined a church in Richmond, Virginia, where I had relocated to be near my family and attend graduate school. I continued to bring my tithe on a regular basis because I enjoyed the act of giving and felt honored to support God and the ministry efforts of my church.
